Greening Your Office

In order for the District to succeed in our sustainability goals, it's important for campuses to green their office practices as well. As much as 25% of a school's energy use comes from lighting.

Turn out the lights

  • Turn off lights when rooms are not in use
  • Post "Last Out, Lights Out" signs at exist doors
  • Use task lighting where appropriate
  • Take advantage of natural sunlight

Reduce energy demand of computers, appliances, and equipment

  • Set computers and copiers to sleep mode & turn off monitors when not in use
  • Purchase Energy Star certified electronics and appliances

Minimize heating and cooling costs

  • Keep doors and windows closed when heating or air conditioning is in use
  • Use blinds to keep the sun out or the heat in
  • Turn off heat and air conditioning in unoccupied areas
  • Where possible, consider turning off air conditioning and opening windows to cool rooms

Print & Copy on Both Sides

  • Use both sides of the paper whenever possible
  • Set shared copier/printer defaults to double-sided
  • Post reminders at copiers and printers

GOOSe (Good on One Side) Paper

  • Save and reuse paper that is printed on one side
  • Designate a place for GOOSe paper near copiers and printers

Scan & Save

  • Share documents electronically when possible
  • Scan and save to electronic files rather than printing

Meet Green

  • Invite meeting attendees to bring reusable cups and utensils
  • Use paper products instead of plastic or styrofoam
  • Provide separate bins for recyclable items

Recycling

  • Paper recycling bins should be placed at each desk, shared working area, and next to printers and copiers
  • Post signs to remind colleagues and students to recycle
  • Place recycling bins in conference rooms and meeting areas
All schools should have blue recycling bins in each classroom and office area.  If you have questions about recycling bins, contact LAUSD's Waste Reduction Hotline at (213) 241-3955.
