LAUSD Sustainability Initiatives

LAUSD aims to be the most sustainable and environmentally-friendly large urban school district in the Country. In 2007, the Board of Education passed a resolution titled Green LAUSD, which directed the superintendent to establish a "green" accountability system outlining measurable outcomes for sustainability. In response, the Sustainability Initiatives Unit (SIU) was developed in 2008 as a part of the Facilities Services Division. The SIU, based upon the Green LAUSD Board Resolution, developed six focus areas outlined below. Click on the buttons to learn about the District's goals and projects as they relate to each initiative.

Energy conservation
Why is it important to conserve energy resources? Because reducing our energy waste not only saves the District dollars, it reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Learn more about our Solar Initiative.

water stewardship
Water is a precious resource, especially in arid climates such as Southern California. To learn how LAUSD is conserving water visit our water stewardship page and find resources on how you can conserve as well.

Awareness & engagement
The District is continuously piloting new technology and alternative practices to reduce our schools' energy and water consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and divert waste from landfills.
Picture
high performance schools
Dedicated to providing a safe and healthy environment for our students, LAUSD adheres to the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) & Leadership in Engineering and Environmental Design (LEED) standards.

Campus ecology
Adding green to campuses not only beautifies the space, it also reduces greenhouse gas emissions, lowers temperatures, and aids in the infiltration of water to underground aquifers. Click the button to learn about our projects.
Picture
waste reduction
Sustainability begins with reducing our negative impacts on the environment, which includes waste reduction. LAUSD is committed to reducing waste throughout the District through diverse projects and initiatives.
