Congratulations Eagle Rock Elementary for being named a 2019 CA Green Ribbon Schools "Green Achiever"!

"Eagle Rock Elementary underwent a major transformation in 2016, removing 23,789 square feet of asphalt, replacing this with a permeable surface made of decomposed granite and native/drought-tolerant trees and plants. Garden programs, a monarch butterfly way station, outdoor classrooms, and many other opportunities coincide with a Green Club, a Garden Club, a Green Team, and environmental learning throughout the education experience. Programs include activity-based learning opportunities that empower students to explore their environment and undertake environmental challenges that require problem-solving and critical thinking. They learn how ethical decision-making, as well as an appreciation for diversity and adaptability, is a civic responsibility for creating sustainable and collective change for our environment."

Eagle Rock received their award from State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond in a ceremony held on April 12.  Eagle Rock has also been nominated
by California Green Ribbon Schools for the US Department of Energy Green Ribbon award.

Be(e) a Pollinator Hero!

According to the National Pollinator Garden Network, Pollinators are responsible for 1 out of 3 bites of food we eat each day, and yet pollinators are at critical point in their own survival. Many reasons contribute to their recent decline.  Increasing the number of pollinator-friendly gardens and landscapes will help revive the health of bees, butterflies, birds, bats and other pollinators across the country.

Here are some ways you can help, at your schools and at home:
Picture
Take the Million Pollinator Garden Challenge!
  • Plant a Pollinator Garden
  • Register your Garden to Be(e) Counted!
  • Plant Sustainably
  • Keep an Eye Out for Free Seeds!
  • Spread the Word

Certify your garden with the National Wildlife Federation!  Learn how to develop a Certified Wildlife Habitat with NWF's Step-by-Step Guide.
Picture
Create habitat for monarchs by planting milkweed!  You don't need a huge garden to support these beautiful pollinators and bees and other butterflies as well.

Look deep into nature and you will understand everything better.   Albert Einstein                         ❧                        One touch of nature makes the whole world kin.  Shakespeare                        ❧                        The sun shines not on us but in us, the river flows not past, but through us.  John Muir                        ❧                        There is no such thing as "away". When we throw anything away, it must go somewhere. Annie Leonard                        ❧                        Stay close to nature. It will never fail you. Frank Lloyd Wright                        ❧                        A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. Greek Proverb                        ❧                        We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. Native American Proverb                        ❧                        Each and every one of us can make changes in the way we live our lives and become part of the solution. Al Gore                        ❧
