Sustainability Advocates

In order to fulfill the District’s goal of becoming the leading sustainable school district in the nation, the District is looking for enthusiastic teachers and administrators to act as Sustainability Advocates (SAs), and serve as contacts between their schools and the District’s Sustainability Initiatives Unit (SIU). SAs will help engage schools in District sustainability programs and initiatives by communicating information from SIU to students and staff members at school sites.

 Green Coordinators empower students to take ownership of the challenge, learn responsibility and engage in a school-wide effort to not only raise money, but raise awareness for a larger cause– the planet. 

Your Role

A Green Coordinator serves as the liaison between the District’s Sustainability Initiatives Unit and other District divisions with regard to outreach, activities and programs related to sustainability, including energy conservation, water stewardship, waste reduction and recycling, greenhouse gas reduction, air quality, and campus green spaces.
  • Promote District sustainability initiatives through social media, morning announcements, assemblies, staff meetings, etc., including:  conservation campaigns and competitions; monthly and seasonal themed activities; and school operations and plant staff requirements
  • Encourage conservation behavior and engagement through green teams or environmental clubs and campus-initiated campaigns
  • Attend yearly workshops and lessons learned events
  • Collaborate with and support Student Liaisons on your campus, if applicable.
  • Inform students and teachers about opportunities and resources for:  field trips and outdoor learning; campus greening; grants; recognition; volunteering and community services; workforce development; community-based partner programs; professional development
  • Promote/create conservation themes that can be infused into student assignments or classroom activities: Carbon Footprint Quiz 
  • Guide and teach students to conduct before/after classroom energy audits.
  • Give students responsibility (e.g., for turning off lights, closing blinds, making sure doors and windows are closed, water conservation practices) 
  • Involve students in creation of posters and other materials with energy savings tips and reminders. (Poster Contest) 
  • Coordinate assist with the School Gardening Program Specialist which includes:  community, edible, instructional, literacy, or multi-functional gardens. Collaborate with partner with various members of school community; stakeholders and other entities in order to raise awareness, garner cooperation, and raise funds for school garden spaces for the District. 
  • Continue to “Build on success!”


Building a Team

Encourage student sustainability clubs or committees and acknowledge or institute their recommendations. Give them responsibility for programs for outreach to other students.
