Education & Awareness is a crucial component of sustainability. Sustainability Initiatives Unit strives to complement the District's core educational mission by identifying opportunities for education, training, and community engagement as we implement each of our initiatives. From increasing eco-literacy through our DROPS Education & Outreach program to contributing to workforce development through our Prop 39 energy audit training program, awareness is at the core of our sustainability mission.

Grades of Green LAUNCH Program
Grades of Green offers fun and interactive toolkits to effectively broaden the environmental knowledge of K-12 students. The LAUNCH Eco-Toolkits (LAUNCH Program) are project-based lessons on environmental subjects including waste, water, plants & animals, energy, and transportation. Each module ranges in time, project intensity, and comes in a K-5 and 6-12 version. Eco-Toolkits, such as the Energy Audit Eco-Toolkit can be completed at any point in the year. Programs can be used in class, afterschool, clubs, or anywhere a facilitator or student leader is able to successfully run the Eco-Toolkit. Each program is Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) aligned, includes all learning materials, worksheets, and a project based experiential learning element. Grades of Green 2023-2024 RISE Campaign
Grades of Green is hosting a RISE Climate Solutions Campaign (RISE). RISE is a yearlong, structured program designed for facilitator led or student led teams to design their own climate solutions (with the guidance of a Grades of Green advisor) in the environmental topic they are most interested in. Over the course of the year, student teams establish a group and design/implement a campaign to realize sustainable change. The opportunities are endless in this program, but some star examples include establishing organics recycling systems, clothing swaps, community clean ups, environmental awareness/harm reduction projects, saving acres of rainforest, and even writing AP Environmental Science curriculum in tandem with staff. USGBC-LA is offering a Green Schools Program
USGBC-LA’s Green Schools Program is devoted to bringing the fundamentals of sustainability education to K-12 students and schools across the Greater Los Angeles region through workshops, volunteer opportunities, and micro-grants to provide sustainable solutions for campuses. The Sustainability Fundamentals education sessions that are doundation of the program consist of a high-level overview of sustainability concepts for primary and secondary school students. The 90-minute workshop is delivered in two 45-minute sessions by experts from USGBC-LA's member network of sustainability professionals. Join them in fostering more climate-conscious citizens and communities for our future, by enrolling your class for FREE and helping them spread the word at your school! |
